Best Respec Order in Enshrouded — When and What to Reset

Pre-1.0 data4 min read

1.0 resets the skill tree of every existing save once, on its own. After that, Keen's last word is from before 1.0: respec "at the nearest Altar", at 1 rune per spent skill point. The 1.0 changelog does not repeat it, so check the altar before you rely on it.

What this page can confirm for 1.0 and what it cannot. Confirmed by Keen's 1.0 posts: the tree resets once on existing saves. Confirmed by the 1.0 game files: which skills exist, what they cost and the 212 points a level-50 character has. Not confirmed for 1.0: where you respec and its price — both come from pre-1.0 notes and are labelled as such below.

What 1.0 confirms

Keen's 1.0 changelog: "When playing for the first time in version 1.0.0.0 with an existing save game, the skill tree will be reset." The combat post a month earlier: "Final thing to note: with the new skills and changes to existing skill placement in the tree, your skill tree has been reset, hopefully for the last time."

The tree also changed under you: "Rebalanced unlock costs and effectiveness of several skills and adjusted the position of a few skills such as Veteran, One-Handed Specialization, Inner Fires and Snap." and "Moved dagger-related skills from the warrior area of the skill tree to the assassin tree, where it makes much more sense." A pre-1.0 build therefore does not map one-to-one onto 1.0 — rebuild it in the skill-tree planner before you spend.

Where and what it costs: the pre-1.0 notes

Where — Keen, Enshrouded: Wake of the Water Update (2025-11-10): "Brief reminder that you can respec your skills at the nearest Altar!"

Cost — Keen, Enshrouded: Souls of the Frozen Frontier Update (2024-11-05): "The cost for resetting the skill tree is now calculated based on the number of previously spent skill points. Each spent skill point costs 1 rune."

Neither line is in the 1.0 changelog, and the 1.0 server files we read carry no respec price, so both are pre-1.0. If the price still holds, re-spending a full 212-point tree would cost 212 runes.

Not on this page any more

Earlier versions of this page also described respec items, cooldowns, where runes come from and an older flat price. Neither Keen's notes nor the 1.0 files we hold say any of it, so it stays off the page until a source does.

Skills that suit any build (our pick)

Mobility and sustain carry across every pivot below. Our pick, with each skill's full cost in the 1.0 files — together 19 points of the 212, leaving 193 for the build itself.

Common pivots: what to drop and pick up

Our suggestions for the pivots players make most, not a game rule. Every skill named is on the 1.0 tree, and the points are its full cost there.

FAQ

How do you respec in Enshrouded 1.0?

On an existing save 1.0 does it for you once: "When playing for the first time in version 1.0.0.0 with an existing save game, the skill tree will be reset." After that, Keen's last note — from before 1.0 — says: "Brief reminder that you can respec your skills at the nearest Altar!" The 1.0 changelog does not repeat it.

How much does a respec cost in Enshrouded?

The last price Keen published is from before 1.0 (2024-11-05): "The cost for resetting the skill tree is now calculated based on the number of previously spent skill points. Each spent skill point costs 1 rune." It is not restated in the 1.0 changelog and not in the 1.0 files we read.

Do you need a respec scroll in Enshrouded?

None of Keen's notes we hold mentions a scroll: they describe the reset at an Altar, paid in runes — and those notes are from before 1.0.

Do I need to respec after 1.0?

No — 1.0 does it for you. "When playing for the first time in version 1.0.0.0 with an existing save game, the skill tree will be reset." Plan the new tree in the planner before you re-spend.

How many skill points do I get back?

All of them. A level-50 character has 212 in the 1.0 files: 98 from levels and 114 from Shroud Roots and Elixir Wells.
