How to Get Legendary Runes in Enshrouded (1.0)

Verified for 1.04 min read

Legendary Runes pay for upgrading rare and legendary weapons at the Blacksmith. Get them by crafting one from 25 Runes at the Blacksmith, or by killing the right enemies and bosses: in the 1.0 files 5 named enemies drop them, at 70–85% a kill when the roll comes up. Spend them on one weapon you plan to keep, not on whatever you hold today.

Runes are the currency of 1.0 gear upgrades, and Legendary Runes are the rarer kind. This page is the order to think about them in: what they are for, how to get them, what to spend them on first. For the item pages themselves, see Runes and Legendary Runes.

Two kinds of source, kept apart. What they are for, the recipe and the enemy drops come from the 1.0 game files. The boss amounts we add at the end come from the wiki (CC BY-SA 4.0), in our words, and are labelled as wiki.

What they are for

In 1.0 the Blacksmith upgrades gear in exchange for Runes. The game's own quest text (“Salvage And Enhance”) says it handles most melee weapons, shields, armor and rings, that upgraded gear gains newly unlocked perks, and that rare and legendary weapons need Legendary Runes. Other gear is paid in plain Runes. The 1.0 notes put the item level cap at 55 for fully upgraded gear.

That one line is the whole rule for this page: Legendary Runes matter only if you are upgrading a rare or legendary weapon. Armor, shields and rings do not need them.

What the files do not give us is the price list: how many Runes or Legendary Runes one upgrade step costs. The server files hold balancing constants for perk costs, not the table, so we print no price. Ask the Blacksmith what an upgrade asks before you commit.

Craft them from Runes

The Blacksmith will make them: 25× Runes → 1 Legendary Runes, and the craft is instant. So a Legendary Rune is 25 Runes of your own, and your supply of Runes sets the ceiling.

Runes themselves come from exploring and from salvaging equipment, per the same quest text. Salvaging gear you will never wear is one source of them. Crafting works wherever you stand with the Runes; the drops below depend on finding the right enemy.

Kill the enemies that drop them

The fixed corpse tables of the 1.0 server files list 5 named enemies that can drop Legendary Runes: Armored Fell Thunderbrute and Fell Thunderbrute (bosses), and Fell Black Knight, Hollow Hound, Hollow Summoner. 53 more enemy templates carry them but have no English name in the files, so we count them and do not name them. The chances below are the files' own.

Legendary Runes in the 1.0 corpse tables
EnemyChance and amount
Armored Fell Thunderbrute85% per kill (one of 2) · ×4–8
Fell Thunderbrute85% per kill (one of 2) · ×4–8
Fell Black Knight70% per kill (one of 6) · ×3–6
Hollow Hound80% per kill (one of 4) · ×3–6; 80% per kill (one of 3) · ×3–6
Hollow Summoner80% per kill (one of 4) · ×3–6; 80% per kill (one of 3) · ×3–6

Reading the chance

“One of N” means the kill rolls one item from a group of N; the percentage is the chance that the roll lands on Legendary Runes. Enemy levels differ by region, so check the regions by level before you go hunting.

Bosses add more (wiki)

The wiki's boss loot tables add 4 bosses with amounts: Fell Critter Queen (2–5), Fell Monstrosity (4–6), Fell Sicklescythe (6–8), Fell Wispwyvern (10). Those numbers are not checked against the files, so treat them as wiki information. A boss you are fighting anyway pays these on top; the Fell Wispwyvern guide is one example.

What to spend them on first

Our advice, built on the rule above and not a file value: spend them on the one rare or legendary weapon you plan to keep.

  1. Pick the weapon first. Rare and legendary weapons are the only things that eat Legendary Runes, so choose between them before you upgrade. The early legendary weapons guide lists the ones you can reach soon.
  2. Check the Blacksmith's price for that weapon, then compare it with the Runes you hold. If you are short, craft the missing Legendary Runes at 25 Runes each.
  3. Upgrade armor, shields and rings with plain Runes. They do not need Legendary Runes, so do not turn Runes into Legendary Runes you will not spend.
  4. Hold the rest. A weapon you replace at the next region wastes what you put in it. When the endgame arrives, you will know which weapon you stayed with.

Common mistakes

Crafting Legendary Runes before you need them. At 25 Runes each, they eat the Runes you want for armor.

Upgrading the weapon you hold, not the one you keep. Choose first; upgrade second.

Crafting while a source is on your route. One Legendary Rune costs 25 Runes, and a kill in the table above rolls 3–8 of them at 70–85%. If one of those enemies is where you are going anyway, take the drop first and keep your Runes. For other materials a route can farm, see the farm routes.
