Flame Shrines and Flame Sanctums are where you collect Sparks, the material the Flame Altar spends to raise your Flame level. The map below pins 68 of them: 49 Flame Shrines, one of them the Flame Shrine of Manathor, and 19 Flame Sanctums.
In the 1.0 game files every Flame upgrade, from level 1 to 11, costs Sparks alongside other materials: 266 Sparks in all. Each Flame level lets you place more Flame Altars (2 at level 1, 16 at level 11) and raises your Shroud resistance. An Altar's building area is a separate upgrade, paid in Shroud Cores.
