Verdant Brook
(190, −41) and (291, −19)
Two clusters around the Sealed Realm of the Guardian plateau — the early-mid base-build favorite. ~8 ore nodes neighbour each cluster, so a single base covers two resources.
537 coal nodes sit on Palpagos Islands. 261 of them — more than half — live in Twilight Dunes. Below: the per-region breakdown, the mining Pals that clear them fastest, and the 2 recipes that consume Coal in the workbench.

Distribution across Palpagos Islands. Numbers are live counts from Pindrop's map data — every node we've documented on the interactive map. Click a region row to see its full marker set.
Twilight Dunes is the answer. 261 of the island's 537 coal nodes (49%) cluster in one biome, and the spawn band is mid-game (Lv 10-25) — so you can start farming well before endgame content.
Once you've unlocked the region's fast-travel statue, place a base inside a coal cluster, assign 2-3 mining Pals (see the next section), and the pile fills itself while you're elsewhere. Coal nodes respawn on roughly a 1-in-game-day cycle.
Backup biomes: Astral Mountains (85), other (76), Mt. Obsidian (56) cover the rest. Mt. Obsidian and Astral Mountains are endgame-tier biomes — useful when you're already farming endgame mats and want to bundle the coal pickup.
Coal nodes break to any mining-capable Pal. Higher Mining Lv = faster break and bigger per-Pal yield contribution. The five below are the picks we recommend — all verified on our mining tier list.

S-tier endgame miner. Mining Lv 4 + Dragon damage scales late-game node DPS.

S-tier alpha-only Pal. Mining Lv 4; bring once you can capture from Mt. Obsidian.

A-tier all-rounder. Mining Lv 3 + Lumbering Lv 3 + Handiwork Lv 4. Best generalist worker on a coal base.

Mid-game Mining Lv 3. Catchable at Lv 17-25 in Twilight Dunes — the same region with 277 coal nodes.

Mining Lv 3 + Kindling Lv 2. Auto-smelts Coal into Refined Ingot when stationed with a Furnace nearby.
Mining is the main source, but two Pals also drop Coal directly on kill or capture. They're not a primary farm (kill time + spawn rarity make them slower than node mining) — but if you're running an alpha circuit or night patrol anyway, the Coal lands as bonus loot.

Mt. Obsidian alpha — endgame Fire-type miniboss. Drops a fixed stack of 10 Coal at 100% rate on top of the standard alpha loot.

Twilight Dunes nocturnal Dark Pal. Also drops 10 Coal at 100% — same yield as Blazamut but spawns at much lower level, so the easier farm for non-endgame players.
Coal is a smelter ingredient — you don't use it directly; you craft two intermediate materials at the Furnace, and those feed every downstream recipe. The Coal item page lists every downstream recipe that consumes them in turn.
Both Refined Ingot and Carbon Fiber are mid-tier materials that gate the rest of your gear progression — late-game weapons, advanced armor, and most schematic crafts trace back to one of these two. Stack coal early; you'll spend it for the entire endgame.
Region density tells you where to settle; specific clusters tell you where to walk in. These five are the community-converged spots — each is a dense knot of nodes in the in-game coordinate system, listed early-to-late game so you can pick by current level.

Twilight Dunes
(−158, −93) and (−98, −121)
The densest coal cluster on Palpagos. Bring Heat Resistant Pelt Armor (Lv 14) or the biome chips your HP. Pairs with the Duneshelter base build.
North of Duneshelter
(327, 485)
~9 coal nodes plus a few ore. Lighter mob density than the inner desert; the spot most players miss because the fast-travel map doesn't advertise it.
Mt. Obsidian
(−570, −652)
Volcano biome — requires Heat Resistant Refined Pelt Armor (Lv 30+) before the heat damage matters. Pairs with Sulfur farming on the same base. Endgame source.
Coordinates are in-game map values (the same numbers the game pin tool shows when you mark a waypoint). Open the live coal-node map to see all 537 nodes pinned visually.
Once you've reached the Sakurajima tech tier, the Coal Mine base structure converts assigned Mining-Lv-3+ Pal labour into a continuous coal drip — the late-game answer to field-cluster grinding.

Twilight Dunes — the desert region in the south of Palpagos Islands. It holds the largest concentration of coal nodes by a wide margin, and the region's Lv 10-25 spawn band means you can start farming as early as mid-game. Astral Mountains is the next-best source for endgame players.
Coal nodes are gated by your pickaxe tier, not your character level. A Stone Pickaxe (Tech Lv 2) can break coal nodes; higher pickaxe tiers (Metal Pickaxe at Tech Lv 14, Refined Metal Pickaxe at Tech Lv 27) just mine faster. A mining-capable Pal with Mining Lv 1+ can also break nodes hands-free at your base.
Astegon (Mining Lv 4) is the strongest endgame miner. For mid-game, Digtoise is the easiest catch — it spawns in Twilight Dunes (the same biome with 277 coal nodes) at Lv 17-25 and has Mining Lv 3. Reptyro is a popular base pick because it auto-smelts coal into Refined Ingot when a Furnace is nearby.
Yes — coal nodes regenerate over real-time. The respawn timer is roughly 1 in-game day per node; nodes in higher-level regions sometimes take longer. Build a base near a coal cluster (Twilight Dunes is the typical pick) and assign 2-3 mining Pals to keep the pile topped up without you visiting the nodes manually.
Coal is a smelter ingredient for two intermediate materials: Refined Ingot (2× coal per craft) and Carbon Fiber (2× coal per craft). Those two materials then feed dozens of mid- to late-game recipes — high-tier weapons, armor, schematic crafting, building upgrades. If you're chasing endgame gear, every loop ends in needing more coal.
The Wandering Merchant stocks coal as a small-quantity purchase but the price-per-unit makes buying impractical at scale. For a single craft, a quick merchant top-off can save a trip; for long-term endgame production, mining your own coal at a Twilight Dunes base remains the only sustainable source.
