Where to Get Coal in Palworld

553 coal nodes sit on Palpagos Islands. 288 of them — more than half — live in Twilight Dunes. Below: the per-region breakdown, the mining Pals that clear them fastest, and the 2 recipes that consume Coal in the workbench.

The best place to farm coal

Twilight Dunes is the answer. 288 of the island's 553 coal nodes (52%) cluster in one biome — but not in one level band. Only 28 of them sit inside the Lv 10-25 Twilight Dunes zone itself. The densest knot is 107 nodes in Desiccated Dunes, which our map labels Lv 40-50, with 14 more in the Lv 40-45 No. 3 Wildlife Sanctuary. Plan the trip around that, not around the region name.

Once you've unlocked the region's fast-travel statue, place a base inside a coal cluster, assign 2-3 mining Pals (see the next section), and the pile fills itself while you're elsewhere. Coal nodes respawn about 30 minutes of real time after you break them — the figure this page's own FAQ and our map's marker text both give, and the one this sentence used to contradict.

Backup biomes: Verdant Brook (114), Mt. Obsidian (57), Bamboo Grove (39) cover the rest. Mt. Obsidian is the endgame-tier entry on that list — useful when you're already farming endgame mats and want to bundle the coal pickup. Astral Mountains, despite its level band, carries no coal nodes at all.

Best mining Pals for coal

Coal nodes need a Pal with Mining Lv 3 or higher — below that the Pal will not touch the vein at all, so it is a gate rather than a speed penalty. Higher Mining Lv = faster break and bigger per-Pal yield contribution. The five below are the picks we recommend — all verified on our mining tier list.

  • Astegon Palworld portrait
    AstegonMining Lv 7

S-tier endgame miner. Mining Lv 7 + Dragon damage scales late-game node DPS.

  • Blazamut Palworld portrait
    BlazamutMining Lv 7

S-tier alpha-only Pal. Mining Lv 7; bring once you can capture from Mt. Obsidian.

  • Anubis Palworld portrait

A-tier all-rounder. Mining Lv 6 + Handiwork Lv 6. Best generalist worker on a coal base.

  • Digtoise Palworld portrait
    DigtoiseMining Lv 4

Mid-game Mining Lv 4. Catchable at Lv 17-25 in Twilight Dunes — the same region with 288 coal nodes.

  • Reptyro Palworld portrait

Mining Lv 5 + Kindling Lv 5. Auto-smelts Coal into Refined Ingot when stationed with a Furnace nearby.

Pals that drop Coal as a side reward

Mining is the main source, but three Pals also drop Coal directly on kill or capture. They're not a primary farm (kill time + spawn rarity make them slower than node mining) — but if you're running an alpha circuit or night patrol anyway, the Coal lands as bonus loot.

  • Blazamut Palworld portrait
    Blazamut10 Coal per kill

Mt. Obsidian alpha — endgame Fire-type miniboss. Drops a fixed stack of 10 Coal at 100% rate on top of the standard alpha loot.

  • Blazamut Ryu Palworld portrait
    Blazamut Ryu10 Coal per kill

Dragon/Fire Blazamut variant, rarity 10 — the same guaranteed 10-Coal stack as base Blazamut. An endgame kill either way, so take whichever you can reach.

  • Pierdon Palworld portrait
    Pierdon4-5 Coal per kill

The accessible one: a rarity-6 Ground Pal that drops 4-5 Coal, 4-5 Ore AND 4-5 Sulfur, every one at 100%. Less per kill than either Blazamut, but you can farm it long before endgame. Menasting no longer drops Coal (our drop data gives it Medium Pal Soul and Venom Gland only). The 1.0 patch notes never mention coal, so we do not claim 1.0 is what changed it.

What coal is used for in Palworld

Coal is mostly a smelter ingredient: the 2recipes our item data records for it are intermediate materials that feed everything downstream. That is not the whole picture, and we would rather say so than imply a closed set — paldb lists Coal as a direct ingredient in several craftables our items.json has not caught up with, Meowmere and Blazamut's Talisman among them. The Coal item page lists every downstream recipe that consumes them in turn.

Both Refined Ingot and Carbon Fiber are mid-tier materials that gate the rest of your gear progression — late-game weapons, advanced armor, and most schematic crafts trace back to one of these two. Stack coal early; you'll spend it for the entire endgame.

Five named coal clusters worth visiting

Region density tells you where to settle; specific clusters tell you where to walk in. These five are the community-converged spots — each is a dense knot of nodes in the in-game coordinate system, listed early-to-late game so you can pick by current level.

Verdant Brook

(190, −41) and (291, −19)

Two clusters around the Sealed Realm of the Guardian plateau — the early-mid base-build favorite. ~8 ore nodes neighbour each cluster, so a single base covers two resources.

Twilight Dunes

(−158, −93) and (−98, −121)

The densest coal cluster on Palpagos. Bring Heat Resistant Pelt Armor (Lv 14) or the biome chips your HP. Pairs with the Duneshelter base build.

North of Duneshelter

(327, 485)

~9 coal nodes plus a few ore. Lighter mob density than the inner desert; the spot most players miss because the fast-travel map doesn't advertise it.

Mt. Obsidian

(−570, −652)

Volcano biome — requires Heat Resistant Refined Pelt Armor (Lv 30+) before the heat damage matters. Pairs with Sulfur farming on the same base. Endgame source.

Coordinates are in-game map values (the same numbers the game pin tool shows when you mark a waypoint). Open the live coal-node map to see all 553 nodes pinned visually.

The passive Coal Mine

Once you've reached the Sakurajima tech tier, the Coal Mine base structure converts assigned Mining Pal labour into a continuous coal drip — the late-game answer to field-cluster grinding.

Staff with Digtoise, Anubis, or any Mining Pal at all — the Quarry itself only needs Mining Lv 1, unlike the field nodes which need Lv 3. Higher levels just cut the cycle time. Full list in the best mining Pals guide. Stack Lucky / Artisan passives on the assigned miner for ~+50% throughput.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the best place to farm coal in Palworld?
Twilight Dunes — the desert region of Palpagos Islands — holds the largest concentration of coal nodes by a wide margin, but the 'farm it at mid-game' shortcut does not survive checking. Only 28 of those 288 nodes sit inside the Lv 10-25 Twilight Dunes zone itself; the biggest single knot is 107 nodes in Desiccated Dunes, which our own map labels Lv 40-50, and another 14 sit in the Lv 40-45 No. 3 Wildlife Sanctuary. Verdant Brook is the next-best source at 114 nodes; Astral Mountains has none at all.
What level do you need to mine coal in Palworld?
Two different gates, and mixing them up is the usual mistake. For YOU, it is pickaxe tier, not character level: Stone Pickaxe unlocks at Technology Lv 1, Metal at Lv 11, Refined Metal at Lv 34 and Pal Metal at Lv 44, each mining faster and returning more coal per node since 1.0. For a PAL, it is work suitability: a coal vein needs Mining Lv 3 or higher, and a Lv 1 or Lv 2 Pal will not touch it at all.
Which Pal is best for mining coal?
Astegon (Mining Lv 7) is one of the strongest miners in the game — 1.0's Work Suitability overhaul stretched the scale to 10 levels, and Aegidron now sits above it at Mining Lv 8. For mid-game, Digtoise is the easiest catch — it spawns in Twilight Dunes (the same biome with 288 coal nodes) at Lv 17-25 and has Mining Lv 4. Reptyro is a popular base pick because it auto-smelts coal into Refined Ingot when a Furnace is nearby.
Does coal respawn in Palworld?
Yes — about 30 minutes of real time per node, the same figure our map's own marker text gives. An empty-looking spot is usually on cooldown rather than missing. Build a base near a coal cluster (Twilight Dunes is the typical pick) and assign mining Pals to keep the pile topped up without visiting the nodes yourself.
What is coal used for in Palworld?
Mostly as a smelter ingredient, for two intermediate materials: Refined Ingot (2× coal per craft) and Carbon Fiber (2× coal per craft), which then feed dozens of mid- to late-game recipes. Those two are what our item data records. Coal is also a direct ingredient in some craftables — Meowmere and Blazamut's Talisman take it raw — so treat the recipe count on this page as our data's floor, not the game's ceiling. Either way, every endgame loop ends in needing more coal.
Can you buy coal from a merchant?
The vendor to look for is the Blacksmith in Training, which restocks coal in batches of roughly 30-40 — not the trickle a 'small-quantity purchase' implies. It is still a top-off rather than a supply line: for long-term endgame production, mining your own at a Twilight Dunes base or running a Coal Quarry remains the sustainable route.
