Enshrouded dedicated server: max players & settings
An Enshrouded server takes up to 16 players. Everything is set in enshrouded_server.json, next to enshrouded_server.exe; the server writes a fresh one on first start. Build that file with the server config generator.
How many players can play Enshrouded?
16 per world. The readme: “The number can only be between 1 and 16.”
“co-op survival Action RPG for up to 16 players”
PC and PS5 players cannot share a world at launch — crossplay status.
More players, more enemies: the “Automatic” enemy amount (new in 1.0)
“When Automatic is set, the amount of enemies is scaled depending on the size of the party in a multiplayer game. As “party” counts every player actively playing in the vicinity. Players in other areas of Embervale are not counted as part of the party.”
The 1.0 balancing table holds one enemy-amount factor per player count, 1 to 16 (amountFactorByPlayerCount):
- 1×1
- 2×1
- 3×1
- 4×1
- 5×1.3
- 6×1.55
- 7×1.8
- 8×2
- 9×2.2
- 10×2.35
- 11×2.5
- 12×2.6
- 13×2.7
- 14×2.8
- 15×2.9
- 16×3
Edit World: changing a world's settings in 1.0
Your own world: the Edit button does nothing?
Keen named the bug the day 1.0 launched, with a workaround until the fix:
“If you're trying to edit your world right now and the edit button doesn't work, try subscribing to something (anything) in adventure sharing, and then try editing your world again. That appears to be a temporary workaround while we fix it.”
Two 1.0 changes Keen says live in the world settings: the Updraft charge, and the Flame level that lets Flame Altars push back the Shroud (below).
“Updraft charge duration is now configurable in world settings, so if you preferred instant updraft, you can have your cake and eat it, too.”
A dedicated server: edit enshrouded_server.json
- Open the file. The readme: “The settings can be configured by editing the file enshrouded_server.json, located in the same folder as the enshrouded_server.exe”. And: “Note: when no enshrouded_server.json config file is found, then a fresh file is created with the start of the enshrouded_server.exe.”
- Pick a preset in
gameSettingsPreset: Default, Relaxed, Hard, Survival, Custom. “When “Custom” is selected, a long list of individual settings can be tweaked.” - With Custom, set any of the 38 keys under
gameSettings— every key, default and range, or build the file in the config generator.
The readme's only note on when to edit the file is for the ban list: “It can also be manually edited in the enshrouded_server.json when the server is not running.”
Not in our data: the options the in-game Edit World screen lists. The 38 keys on this page are Keen's documented set for dedicated servers.

User groups & permissions
The four default groups; each has its own password, and you can add your own.
| Group | Kick & ban | Open base chests | Dig the open world | Build in bases | Place & upgrade altars |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Admin | |||||
| Friend | |||||
| Guest | |||||
| Visitor |
A group can also hold reservedSlots so its players get in when the server is full. Every group except Visitor can fight, gather and quest outside bases.
“Hosts now define the default permission level for every joining player with a single password. Afterwards, each player character can be promoted or demoted individually if needed.”
“On dedicated servers, the user groups with the associated passwords work as before - promoting and demoting is not possible while playing on the server.”

Flame Altars in the Shroud (new in 1.0)
What flameLevelFogRemoval controls — Keen's changelog on pushing the Shroud back with Flame Altars:
“To unlock this feature, the final flame level 11 has to be unlocked. Alternatively, the required flame level can be lowered to any level via the world settings.”
