The short answer
Chromite is buried underground on Feybreak and is invisible until something detects it — either the Metal Detector, unlocked at Technology level 56, or the Pal Smokie, which marks deposits for you. Almost every node we have mapped sits on Feybreak, with Scorched Hill the single densest area and Stone Pillar Cave next. Two Pals drop it directly at 100%: Silvegis, 2-3 per kill, and Smokie itself, 1-2. It is the endgame alloy ore — Refined Ingot, Mythical Wooden Board, and the Hexolite that Chromite forms with Hexolite Quartz.

What you need to take Chromite
Mining level decides how fast a node comes apart, and nothing about it is resource-specific — the Pal that clears these fastest clears everything else fastest too. Ranked from the work-suitability data, where Palworld 1.0 raised the ceiling from 7 to 8.

Smokie does both jobs
Smokie is the only Pal on this page that both finds Chromite and drops it. Deploying it marks nearby deposits, and paldb reports a levelled Smokie pulling as much as 400 Chromite from a node against the Metal Detector's 80-90. If you are going to farm Chromite seriously, catching one is the single biggest multiplier available.
The caves are worth the detour
paldb notes six caves on Feybreak that each hold four Chromite nodes. Our map's densest surface areas are Scorched Hill and Stone Pillar Cave — the cave clusters are tight enough that one trip clears several nodes without flying between them.
