The Blood Moon horde runs from 22:00 to 4:00 game time. How many zombies it sends, and which, depends on your gamestage: at gamestage 16 the waves are 46 zombies, at 97 they are 411.

Gamestage formula, the horde table for all 322 stages the game defines, and when each zombie joins — read from the game's gamestages file.

Days survived count up to your level only; each death takes 2 off. After the waves the stage keeps sending more, up to 10 alive at once.

How gamestage is worked out

gameStage = ( playerLevel + daysSurvived ) * difficultyBonus

  • difficultyBonus is 1.2 in the file.
  • Days survived grows by one each game day, loses 2 on every death, and is capped at your player level.
  • The result rounds down: level 10 after 4 days is (10 + 4) × 1.2 = 16.8, so gamestage 16.
  • A party: the highest gamestage counts ×1, the next ×0.5, each one after it half again. Players at 60, 40, 20 make a party gamestage of 85.
  • The horde uses the highest stage the file defines at or below that number, worked out once when the Blood Moon rises.

Horde size by gamestage

Waves: zombies the stage sends before its closing group. Alive at once: the spawner's per-player limit, which the Blood Moon Count world setting caps.

Kinds: how many different zombies the stage's groups list, and how many of them are feral, radiated, charged or infernal. The server's MaxSpawnedZombies (64) covers the entire world. It is scaled based on use case (x1.9 blood moons, x2.1 sleepers). Changing this setting can have a huge impact on performance.

Blood Moon world settings

Blood Moon Frequency
Number of in-game days between Blood Moons. Disabled = No Blood Moons.
Blood Moon Range
Number of days after Blood Moon frequency the event can occur. For example: A frequency of 7 + a range of 5 randomizes the Blood Moon between day 7 and day 12. 0 Days = No randomness.
Blood Moon Warning
Sets when the Blood Moon warning appears on the HUD and the day number changes to red.
Blood Moon Count
Controls the maximum number of zombies alive Per Player during a Blood Moon. Nearby players share a group cap of up to 30 zombies. If the cap would be exceeded, game stage scaling increases the difficulty instead. The world cap is about 1.9x the MaxSpawnedZombies. Lower game stages can reduce the number of spawns. Increasing this setting can greatly impact performance.

The game's own descriptions of each option.

7 Days to Die Blood Moon — FAQ

When does the Blood Moon occur in 7 Days to Die?
On a day the world settings decide. Blood Moon Frequency is the "number of in-game days between blood moons", and Blood Moon Range adds randomness on top of it — in the game's own example, "a frequency of 7 + a range of 5 randomizes the Blood Moon between day 7 and day 12."
What time does the Blood Moon start in 7 Days to Die?
At 22:00 game time. The game's own Blood Moon challenge reads: "Survive a Blood Moon in-game without dying or disconnecting between 22:00 and 4:00."
How long does a Blood Moon last in 7DTD?
From 22:00 to 4:00: 6 in-game hours.
What happens if you die on a Blood Moon in 7 Days to Die?
That night's horde keeps its strength: the game works out the gamestage once, when the Blood Moon rises, and keeps it for the whole event. The death still costs you 2 days of days-survived, which lowers your gamestage for later hordes — and the Survive a Blood Moon challenge only counts a night without dying.
How big is the Blood Moon horde?
It depends on the gamestage. At gamestage 16 the waves send 46 zombies; at 97, 411. The waves top out at 1,000 zombies from gamestage 381 up; past that, what grows is how many can be alive at once per player: 117 at gamestage 381, 256 at 4086.
