Where to Find Mechanical Parts, Springs and Duct Tape
Break garage doors and roll-up gates with a wrench, ratchet or impact driver (8 to 12 mechanical parts and 8 to 12 springs each), then strip every car (4 to 10 parts, 3 to 6 springs). On Navezgane, 130 destroyed workbenches can hold up to 5. Duct tape you craft; electrical parts come from air conditioners and fans.

Mechanical parts, springs, duct tape and electrical parts are the four components that stall a mid-game base. They have different best sources, so this page goes source by source.

Five ways to get them, fastest first
Ordered by parts per swing, from the files' own drop counts.

Salvage garage doors and gates: 8 to 12 mechanical parts each, plus springs.

Strip every vehicle: 4 to 10 each, and springs and electrical parts too.

Open destroyed workbenches: 130 on the map, up to 5 each.

Search containers: 40 kinds can hold mechanical parts.

Craft or buy: duct tape is crafted; all four are on the general trader list.
Bring the right tool and a perk point
Impact Driver, Ratchet and Wrench are the three salvage tools in the files. Salvage Operations (Perception 1) adds "up to 20% more resources" at rank 1 and up to 100% at rank 5 (perk page).
Method 1: Salvage garage doors and gates
6 blocks drop 8 to 12 mechanical parts when you destroy them: White Steel Garage Door 3x3 / White Steel Garage Door 4x3 / White Steel Garage Door 5x3 / Roll Up Security Gate 3x3 / Roll Up Security Gate 4x3 / Roll Up Security Gate 5x3. They drop 8 to 12 springs as well, which makes them the best single block for both parts. The Reinforced Drawbridge gives 4 to 20, the widest range in the file.
Wooden powered garage doors and roll-up doors give less (2 to 7), so skip them if a steel one is near.
| Blocks | Mechanical parts | How |
|---|---|---|
| 4–20 | Destroy with a salvage tool | |
| 8–12 | Destroy with a salvage tool | |
| 4–10 | Harvest with a salvage tool | |
| 2–10 | Destroy with a salvage tool | |
| 8 | Harvest with a salvage tool | |
| 2–7 | Destroy with a salvage tool |
Risks
Doors and gates stand inside POIs, many of them rated. Clear the POI first: its skull rating and sleeper volumes are on the POI list.
Method 2: Strip every vehicle
11 vehicle blocks, such as White Sedan / Burnt Sedan / White Minivan / White SUV / White Pickup Truck / White Semi Truck / Police Car / White Fire Truck / School Bus / White Forklift 01 / White Forklift 02, drop 4 to 10 mechanical parts when harvested. The same cars give 3 to 6 springs and 1 to 5 electrical parts. That makes one harvested sedan the cheapest all-round stop.
Their loot containers (the trunk or cabin) are listed under containers. Forklifts and fire trucks are in the same group as cars.
Method 3: Open destroyed workbenches
The map places 130 Destroyed Workbench containers in 120 POIs. One can hold 1–5 mechanical parts, 1–4 springs, 1–4 duct tape and 1–3 electrical parts, so it is the best mapped stop for all four at once. The file lists a separate "Destroyed Workbench, Empty" block that drops 8 mechanical parts when harvested (items page).
The numbers are the 8 POIs with the most of them (ties: lowest skull rating, then nearest trader). With the "Workstations In The Wild" sandbox option on, a working workbench stands there instead, per the map's own note.

| # | POI | Workbenches | Skulls | Nearest trader |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Area 7 | 3 | 5 skulls | Trader Bob (1,400 m) |
| 2 | Spitz Seeds | 2 | 1 skull | Trader Bob (1,300 m) |
| 3 | BJ Welding Company | 2 | 1 skull | Trader Bob (1,350 m) |
| 4 | The McCormick Residence | 2 | 2 skulls | Trader Rekt (700 m) |
| 5 | Mason Farms | 2 | 3 skulls | Trader Rekt (450 m) |

| 8 | The Mortician's house | 2 | 4 skulls | Trader Rekt (1,050 m) |
Method 4: Search containers
27 loot lists can hold mechanical parts, 21 springs, 24 duct tape and 24 electrical parts. Most roll 1 to 2. Bigger rolls: Destroyed Workbench (1–5), Farm Truck (1–3), Rolling Toolbox (1–3) and Toolbox (1–3). Garage storage opens at any loot stage and rolls 1–2. Toolboxes and trucks are the ones to check first.
| Container | Mechanical parts | Springs | Duct tape | Electrical parts |

| Destroyed Workbench | 1–5 | 1–4 | 1–4 | 1–3 |
| Rolling Toolbox | 1–3 | - | 1–2 | - |

Method 5: Craft duct tape, buy the rest
Duct tape has no block source in the files. You craft it at the backpack: 1 glue and 7 cloth fragments make 1. 38 kinds of container can also hold it.
Electrical parts: the best blocks are Air Conditioner / Vent Fan / Vent Fan, Double (3–12), Chandelier / Street Light (POI) (4–8) and Retro Refrigerator, Open (1–8). Trader Bob lists them in his specialty stock. Mechanical parts, springs, duct tape and electrical parts are all on the general trader list (base value 32, 22, 25, 32).
Scrapping an Engine gives mechanical parts, but the files give no amount. The "engine gives 30 mechanical parts" figure that circulates is not in the V3.3 files, which list the Engine as a scrap source with no amount.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting the tool. All 110 blocks need a wrench, ratchet or impact driver: the drops are tagged for salvage tools.
- Breaking wooden doors first. They drop 2 to 7; steel garage doors and gates drop 8 to 12.
- Skipping cars. One car gives 4 to 10 mechanical parts, 3 to 6 springs and 1 to 5 electrical parts.
- Buying duct tape. You can craft it from glue and cloth.
FAQ
Where do you get mechanical parts in 7 Days to Die?
Salvage garage doors and roll-up gates (8 to 12 each), harvest cars (4 to 10) and open destroyed workbenches (up to 5). All block drops need a wrench, ratchet or impact driver.
How many mechanical parts does an engine give?
The files list the Engine as a scrap source of mechanical parts but give no amount. A figure of 30 circulates; it is not in the V3.3 files.
What is the best source of springs?
The same garage doors and gates (8 to 12), then the Reinforced Drawbridge (4 to 12) and cars (3 to 6).
How do you make duct tape?
Craft it at the backpack: 1 glue and 7 cloth fragments.
Where do you find electrical parts?
Air conditioners and vent fans give 3 to 12, retro refrigerators 1 to 8, and chandeliers and street lights 4 to 8. Trader Bob stocks them.
Can you buy mechanical parts?
Yes: they are on the general trader list. The files give a base value of 32; the trader price depends on markup.
Do I need a perk?
No, but Salvage Operations rank 1 (Perception 1) adds up to 20% more resources from salvage tools, and up to 100% at rank 5.
