The Forest Weapons: Stats, Damage and the Best Weapon

Every weapon number the game files store: 15 weapons with damage, smash damage, speed, stamina and block, the ranged weapons with their projectile damage, and the upgrade items. Data from the game files (pre-1.10 build).

What is the best weapon in The Forest?

The files do not rank weapons; this is a sort of the stored numbers. Of the 15 weapons, the highest weaponDamage is Club and Chainsaw (9) and the highest smashDamage is Club (13). A normal swing sends int(weaponDamage) and a heavy / combo hit int(weaponDamage) × 3, so Club and Chainsaw deal 9 per swing and 27 per heavy hit, and need 8 swings or 3 heavy hits on a Pale cannibal on Normal (14 and 5 on Hard). Speed, stamina and block differ per weapon (the table); the strongest projectile is the Flintlock ammo at 50 damage.

Hits: from the game's damage formula (weaponInfo.OnTriggerEnter); strength and upgrades not included, and a knocked-down cannibal takes double damage while a sleeping one loses 100 (EnemyHealth.HitReal). Hits to kill every enemy type.

All weapon stats

45 items carry weapon numbers in the files: 15 are flagged as weapons, 30 are other things you can hold and swing (body parts, animal heads, meat, rocks). 7 more weapon-flagged items have no damage number stored; they are listed as ranged rows. The table opens on the weapons (melee and ranged); the 30 other things you can hold are under "Other held items". Click a column to sort.

  • The arrow prefab variants (22, 25 and 35) all drop the same "Arrows" item; which variant flies depends on the ammo bonus of the arrows, and that selection code was not decoded.
  • Item 79 (the bow, internal name Bow): the code sets the arrow's damage to 14 when this bow is in the first equipment slot, whatever the arrow prefab says. The code names that item only; the other crafted bow (item 279, internal name RecurveBow) shows no such override in the files. Both are called "Crafted Bow" in the game's text.
  • A head hit multiplies a projectile's damage by 20 in the code (EnemyHealth.Hit(ArrowDamage.damage); a head hit multiplies by 20).
  • The Flintlock Pistol: ammo projectile 50 damage, reload 6.3 s, dry-fire reload 0.3 s. Where the 8 gun parts are.
  • The crossbow is not in this build.

Weapon upgrade items

The game's upgrade component lists these items and the stat change each one applies. The code applies them; how several of them stack (added or multiplied, and how the decay curve bends the next one) was not decoded, so only the stored numbers are shown.

About the data

  • Source: the weaponInfo component of each item, as stored in the client (46 found, 45 linked to an item_id via HeldItemIdentifier, 1 not linked). Formulas are literals in the compiled game code.
  • The strength stat scales the weapon's damage property in the code (weaponDamage * (1 + PhysicalStrength.CurrentStrengthScaled / 140); x1.3 when player health is in the 'grey zone'), but a hit on an enemy uses the raw field. That is why strength and upgrades are not in any hits count on this site.
  • In weaponInfo.OnTriggerEnter a normal swing sends int(weaponDamage); a heavy / combo hit (hitReactions.kingHitBool or fsmHeavyAttackBool) sends int(weaponDamage) * 3. Against Armsy, Virginia and the fat mutant the chainsaw halves weaponDamage first (int(weaponDamage / 2)), for both.
  • EnemyHealth.HitReal then applies the damage: Armsy, Virginia, the fat mutant, the baby and the boss lose it as it is; cannibals lose it times 2 while knocked down, and a flat 100 while asleep. None of that is in a hits count.
  • A separate code path uses int(smashDamage), unscaled, for smashDamage; how it relates to the heavy attack was not decoded, so the hits columns use weaponDamage only.
  • Values that look odd are reported as stored. The Upgraded Stick has the same weaponDamage as the Stick (2 and 2, smash 8 and 8). The Crafted Club (8) is below the Club (9).
  • 7 of the 22 weapon-flagged items have no weaponInfo and so no stored damage: Flare Gun, Rabbit, Crafted Bow, Flintlock Pistol, Crafted Bow, Slingshot and Hairspray. Thrown explosives and thrown rocks have no stored damage number either.
  • None of the numbers are from play-testing.
