All Weapons and Gear Locations in The Forest

Game files, pre-1.103 min read

Of the key weapons, 3 lie on the surface (Flare Gun, Plane Axe, Upgraded Spear) and 5 each in a cave of their own: Katana (Dead Cave), Modern Axe (Hanging Cave), Chainsaw (Wet Cave), Climbing Axe (Ledge Cave), Rusty Axe (Submerged Cave).

14 key-item pages plus the flashlight and compass guides cover the weapons and tools the files place. This article puts them in the order I would collect them: surface first, then the caves, then keys.

The 5 steps at a glance

  1. Weapons on the surface. No cave needed.
  2. Weapons in caves. One cave each.
  3. Gear. Rebreather, flashlight, compass, air canisters.
  4. Keycards and the bunker. Where the doors are.
  5. What you build instead. Recipes that replace a trip.

Step 1: Pick up the surface weapons

Three key weapons are placed above ground, so you can have them before the first cave. The Flare Gun lies 26 m from the plane cockpit marker; the Plane Axe, no landmark within 100 m. The Upgraded Spear has 2 copies, the most of any surface weapon.

The Flintlock Pistol belongs here too, but you do not find it: the files place 8 Old Gun parts on the surface and the pistol is the recipe that joins them.

Step 2: Go underground for the big weapons

Five weapons lie one to a cave. The table gives the cave, the way in that is closest to the weapon and how far that is in a straight line. The cave link opens the whole cave, the item link opens the pin on the map.

Bring a weapon you trust

Every one of these caves has enemy spawners. The enemies hub shows how many hits each type needs with the axes, the club and the katana, so you can choose before you go down.

Step 3: Collect the gear

Four pieces of gear matter for the caves. The Rebreather lies in the Submerged Cave (cave 5) and needs air canisters: the files place 23 of them in 8 places, 8 of them in the Submerged Cave itself.

The flashlight is the item the game calls Plastic Torch: 3 pickups in 3 caves, the nearest entrance 262 m from a torch in the Submerged Cave. The compass has one pin, in the Hanging Cave, 42 m from its climb-down entrance (guide).

Step 4: Find the keycards

There are 1 Keycard and 2 Gold Keycards. The keycard lies in the Lawyer Cave (cave 6); the gold ones are in the endgame bunker. Each page lists the readers that take the card (1 for the keycard, 2 for the gold one).

The 7 broken toys are the odd one out: 7 places, one in each.

Step 5: Build what you cannot find

Some weapons have no pin because you make them. The crafting hub lists every recipe, the crafting guide gives the order, and best weapons ranks what you end up carrying.

Every location page

The key items hub lists all 14 pages with their maps. The two guides above add the flashlight and the compass.
