How to Get Water in The Forest

Game files, pre-1.103 min read

Find an Old Pot (the map has 5), fill it at a pond or lake and boil it on a fire. The files store 40 seconds for a pot to finish; a player guide says about 30 (Corrosion Hour). For water at the base, build a Water Collector (4 Stick, 1 Turtle Shell).

Five steps: where the water is, how to make it safe, and how to carry and store it.

The 5 steps at a glance

  1. Find the water. Sources on the map.

  2. Boil it in the Old Pot. 5 pots.

  3. Craft a Waterskin. 2 Deer Skin, 1 Rope.

  4. Build a Water Collector. 4 Stick, 1 Turtle Shell.

  5. Top up with other drinks. Soda, berries, booze.

Step 1: Find the water

The atlas names 63 surface sources "Polluted water source" and a further 20 "Water source" markers inside the endgame bunker, which are not labelled polluted. Open the water layer and take the nearest pin to your base.

A player guide separates three kinds: sea water and the streams that feed from it (undrinkable), ponds and lakes (fresh), and polluted water (drinkable, with a 20% chance of sickness and a small health loss) (Corrosion Hour). The files hold only the word "polluted".

Step 2: Boil it in the Old Pot

The game's loading hint reads: find a pot to boil water. The Old Pot's text is "Use to boil water". The files store 40 seconds for the pot to finish on a fire and 3600 seconds before it burns; a player guide says to put it on a campfire for about 30 seconds (Corrosion Hour). The Old Pot guide lists all 5 pots with a map.

Pro tip

The pot's use effect is -1 thirst in the files, the same as the Waterskin and the largest drop of any drink in the table in step 5.

Step 3: Craft a Waterskin

The Waterskin is 2 Deer Skin, 1 Rope. A rope is 7 Cloth, and the atlas places 37 deer zones for the skins. A player guide says it holds enough to fill your thirst twice and recommends filling it from boiled or collected water (Corrosion Hour).

Step 4: Build a Water Collector

The Water Collector costs 4 Stick, 1 Turtle Shell. The shell comes from a turtle: the water layers place 18 turtle spawners (turtle layer). The water file stores a rain fill of 0.01 per second and a dry-out of 0.5 per day (read as the collector's), so it wants open sky. A player guide says it holds one to five drinks (Corrosion Hour).

Step 5: Top up with other drinks

These items lower thirst when used. The files do not state the scale of thirst, so compare the numbers with each other, not with a bar.

Common mistakes

  • Drinking from the sea. A player guide calls sea water undrinkable (Corrosion Hour).
  • Putting a collector under a roof. It fills from rain and snow.
  • Waiting for a turtle you cannot find. The shell is the gate: use the turtle layer.
