How to Survive the Cold in Subnautica: Below Zero
The cold is a game setting (body temperature falls in cold places) and the answer in the files is the Cold Suit: 1 fragment, 1 fixed pin, and 4 Snow Stalker fur for the whole set of suit, gloves and helmet. The files hold no temperature or damage numbers, so this page says what is there and stops.
- Cold Suit fragment1 fixed pinGlacial Basin, 17 m above sea level
- Fur for the set4suit 2, gloves 1, helmet 1
- Fixed fur pin1in Glacial Basin
- Placed Snow Stalkers35adults and young
I read this from the recipe table, the pins and the game's own databank text, which I paraphrase. The files carry no temperature, drain rate or damage figures, and I do not invent them.

The 5 steps at a glance
Step 1: Scan the Cold Suit fragment
Cold suit unlocks after you scan 1 fragment (3 s a scan). The map holds 1 fixed pin in 1 area.
The databank's cold-weather advice (the Arctic Survival Almanac) tells surface explorers that high winds can bring on hypothermia quickly and that a good cold suit pays off. The suit's own entry lists it as rated to 133.8 Kelvin.
Cold suit is crafted at the Fabricator from 2 Fiber mesh, 2 Snow stalker fur. Counted down to raw materials that is 4 Creepvine sample, 2 Snow stalker fur. The game describes it as "An insulated suit to provide protection from the cold."
| Area | Depth | On the map |
|---|---|---|
| Glacial Basin | 17 m above sea level | Open pin |
Step 2: Collect the fur
The suit takes 2 Snow Stalker fur, the gloves 1 and the helmet 1, so 4 in all, plus 8 Creepvine samples behind the fiber mesh (8 Creepvine sample, 4 Snow stalker fur). The map pins one loose Snow stalker fur in Glacial Basin at 17 m above sea level. Snow Stalkers are placed too: 35 pins (22 adults, 13 young), in Glacial Basin 26 and Arctic Spires 9. The databank's note on them is to avoid them; bright light and unpredictable noise are said to deter an attack. I did not find a drop table for the fur in the files.
Step 3: Craft the three pieces
Cold suit is crafted at the Fabricator from 2 Fiber mesh, 2 Snow stalker fur. The game describes it as "An insulated suit to provide protection from the cold." A story goal ties the gloves and helmet to the suit: when the Cold Suit reaches you, the game unlocks both of them.
| Piece | Made of | What the game says |
|---|---|---|
| 2 Fiber mesh, 2 Snow stalker fur | An insulated suit to provide protection from the cold. | |
| 1 Fiber mesh, 1 Snow stalker fur | Insulated gloves to provide protection from the cold. | |
| 1 Fiber mesh, 1 Snow stalker fur | An insulated helmet to provide protection from the cold. |
Step 4: Keep warm in other ways
The Fevered Pepper tree is placed in the world (79 spots). The databank says its fruit raises body temperature, and the Spicy fruit salad is made from it (1 Fevered Pepper, 1 Preston's Plant Leaf); its description: "A surprisingly delicious salad with warming effects." The Thermos holds a hot drink: 2 Quartz, 1 Titanium. The Reinforced Dive Suit, from 1 fragment (1 fixed pin, Lily Pads), is described as giving "enhanced survival in extreme temperatures".
Step 5: Use shelter and water
The almanac suggests natural shelter or restorative hot springs on the surface and says that in a standard dive suit, water may offer safety from extreme cold. The map has 78 thermal pins, but the files do not say which of them are the hot springs the almanac means, and the steam vents are described as hot enough to burn a bystander, so I would not treat them as a heater.
Common mistakes
- Looking for a temperature number. None is in the files.
- Counting on one fur. The set takes 4.
- Walking up to a Snow Stalker for fur. The databank advises avoiding them.
About these numbers
Every number here is read from the game files of the Steam build of 12 Aug 2025. Fixed pins and recipes are exact. Spawn chances come from a model of the game's spawner tables and have not been checked in a running game. Anything the files do not hold is marked on the page.
I paraphrase the game's databank text and do not copy the logs; the numbers are the recipe table's and the pins'.
