Subnautica: Below Zero Biomes

18 biomes and named areas, each with its depth, what spawns there and the pins inside it. The game's biome map has 23 classes; the table at the bottom says which have a page and why the others do not.

The 23 classes of the biome map

The game stores its biomes as a 1,024 by 1,024 grid of 4 m cells with 23 class names. 3 classes are variants of a biome and are merged into its page (Twisty Bridges, Shallow Twisty Bridges, Glacial Basin (underwater)); 7 have no page. Four more pages (Glacial Pass, Crystal Caverns, Fabricator Caverns, Koppa Mining Site) have no class of their own: the grid is flat, so the game keeps those areas only in its spawner tables, and they are named from the game's own location strings.

Spawner areas with no page of their own: WorldEdge (14,080 slots), MargArea (9,627 slots), IceSheet (7,128 slots), Arctic (3,998 slots), ArcticCaldera (3,844 slots), MethaneIceCave (2,409 slots), Glacier (65 slots), DeepArctic (33 slots), HotSprings (25 slots). They are counted in the resource and creature totals as “Other areas”.

How the biome pages are built

Depth of an area = the heights of its baked slots (min, 5th, median, 95th percentile, max). A pin belongs to the area of the nearest baked slot within 30 m (3-D, so a cave counts for its own area); a pin with no slot nearby takes the biome-map class above it (2-D). Depth is metres below sea level; the Arctic Spires and Outpost Zero lie above it.

“Most likely here” is the resource and the creature with the largest expected count in the area. Both are a model of the game's spawner tables, not verified in a running game; pins are exact. See the creatures, flora and resources pages.

Biome names are the game's own location strings. The map's biome focus draws the border of a class on the full map.
