The 6 steps at a glance

Steps 1 to 3 plant the first seed. Steps 4 and 5 are when to pick and what to plant. Step 6 is what the crop is for.

  1. Collect seeds. Pick plants and take gifts.
  2. Build a planter. 18 sticks or 16 sticks.
  3. Sow the seed. Interact with the planter.
  4. Wait 2 days, then pick. Berries again at once, herbs after 2.
  5. Choose what to grow. 17 plants in three families.
  6. Put the crop to work. Mixes, cooking and Virginia.

Step 1: Collect seeds

Pick plants while you explore; players say you may receive seeds with them, shown as a message in the lower left corner (Gamepressure). Mushrooms are planted from the mushroom itself.

  • Pick herbs, berries and mushrooms on every walk. The heal guide shows where the herbs grow.
  • Virginia brings berries and herbs as gifts, and Gfinity says plants and berries from her come with seeds; see the befriend guide.

Step 2: Build a planter

Open the building book and pick a planter (Gamepressure). The Standing Planter costs 18 sticks; the Wall Planter costs 16 sticks. Grow plants from seeds, and mushrooms from mushrooms.

  1. Gather 18 sticks.
  2. Open the building book and choose a planter.
  3. Place it at your base, where you pass every day.

Pro tip

Wall planters take a wall instead of floor space. One of each costs 34 sticks together.

Step 3: Sow the seed

Walk up to the planter and press the interact key to see your seeds, then sow the ones you want from that menu (Gamepressure).

Not in the files

Ground planting, watering and a limit on plants per planter are not in the data we hold, and the guides we read do not cover them either.

Step 4: Wait 2 days, then pick

Every garden plant takes 2 days to give its first harvest. After that, Blackberry, Blueberry, Guarana, Salmonberry, Snowberry and Twinberry are listed with a regrow of almost zero (the file says 0.005 days), while Aloe Vera, Arrowleaf, Chicory, Devil's Club, Fireweed, Horsetail and Yarrow and the four mushrooms take 2 days.

Our formula: you pick when you visit, so a plant gives one pick per visit or per regrow, whichever is slower.

Step 5: Choose what to grow

The 17 plants are three families.

  • Berries (6): Blackberry, Blueberry, Guarana, Salmonberry, Snowberry and Twinberry. Pick them whenever you pass.
  • Herbs (7): Aloe Vera, Arrowleaf, Chicory, Devil's Club, Fireweed, Horsetail and Yarrow. The base of the medicine mixes.
  • Mushrooms (4): Fly Amanita, Hydnum Repandum, King Oyster and Shiitake. Two per pick, and the ingredients of the mushroom soup.

Full numbers

Each plant's yield and regrow, and a calculator for your own plot, are on the garden planner.

Step 6: Put the crop to work

Garden herbs cover the medicine recipes Health Mix (Aloe Vera and Yarrow), Health Mix + (Aloe Vera, Horsetail and Fireweed), Energy Mix (Chicory and Arrowleaf) and Energy Mix + (Chicory, Fireweed and Devil's Club). Berries and mushrooms feed the pot: see the cooking guide for Jam, Liquid Battery and the mushroom soup. The wiki also lists letting Virginia eat from your crop plots as a way to raise her sentiment (see the companions page).

Common mistakes

  • Expecting a quick crop. The first pick is 2 days away for every plant.
  • Visiting rarely. Picks follow your visits: a daily visit gives a berry plant 9 picks in 10 days, a visit every 2 days 5.
  • Putting the planter far from camp. You pick on visits, and visits set the yield.
  • Forgetting the mushroom is its own seed. Plant the mushroom you picked.
