Project Zomboid Admin Commands (Build 42)
Project Zomboid Build 42 has 64 admin commands — /additem, /addxp, /teleport, /godmode, /createhorde and the rest — plus a few any player can use, such as /roll and /changepwd. The game's own help text writes each one with a leading slash, the way you type it in chat. Which ones work for you depends on your role: of the 68 commands that work in this build, an Admin can run all of them, a Moderator 59, a GM 29, an Observer 14 and an ordinary player 7.
Read from the Build 42 dedicated server's code (depot manifest of 23 Sept 2026): every command's name, its help text as the game shows it, and the permission it needs. Click a command anywhere on this page to copy it.

/additem: find any item ID
/additem takes the item's ID in module.item form — Base.Axe, not “Axe”. Search the game's item scripts below, add a player name if the item is for someone else, and copy the finished command. To see where an item spawns instead of spawning it, use the item finder on the Knox County map.
/addxp: skill names
/addxp wants the skill's internal name, which is often not the one on screen: Carpentry is Woodwork, First Aid is Doctor, Foraging is PlantScavenging. The game's example is /addxp "rj" Woodwork=2. All 35 skills:

Roles: who can run what
A server gives every account a role, and each role holds a set of permissions. These are the built-in roles, each with the description the game gives it. Each role can do everything the one listed before it can, and more.
| Role | The game's description | Commands |
|---|---|---|
| User | Have no capabilities. | 7 |
| Priority | Have login priority | 7 |
| Observer | Can use teleport, god mode, go inside safehouse. But he can't add xp, items and make another change. | 14 |
| GM | Can use teleport, god mode, add xp, items and make another change. | 29 |
| Moderator | Can make all except edit roles, reload lua files, change server options. | 59 |
| Admin | Have all capabilities. | 68 |
The help text of /setaccesslevel still lists an “Overseer” level; the built-in roles in this build are the ones above.
How do I make myself admin?
- On a dedicated server, the first start asks for one in the console — the game's prompt is “ Enter new administrator password:”. The server also takes
-adminusernameand-adminpasswordas start options; the server's own message for the second reads “admin password changed via -adminpassword option”. - From then on, roles are given with
/setaccesslevel— lowest role that can run it: Moderator. The game's help: “Set access level of a player. Current levels: Admin, Moderator, Overseer, GM, Observer. Use /setaccesslevel "username" "accesslevel". Example /setaccesslevel "rj" "moderator"” - Setting up the server itself — ports, start scripts, memory, the config files and every server setting — is on the dedicated server page.
