Where to Find Diamonds in Subnautica: Biomes and Depth
Diamonds are deep and rolled fresh in every new game. The model expects about 310 spawns, and Inactive Lava Zone holds the most (104), then Deep Grand Reef (62) and Bones Field (51). Half of all the chance lies deeper than 726 m.

Diamonds are rolled fresh in every new game. This page ranks the areas by how many loose diamonds the game's spawner tables expect there and says how deep they are. The game's own PDA also names two kinds of rock that hold diamond; those are covered below but are not in the numbers.

Where diamonds are most likely
The 4 areas with the most expected diamonds, with 82% of the world's chance between them. Each picture is our map render with the diamonds chance painted on it and the area's strongest cell marked.

Taking diamonds out of the ground
0%in large deposits- No large deposit of diamonds is in the spawn tables: every spawn is a loose piece.
- The PDA entry for shale outcrops ends "Assessment: Gold, lithium and diamond source", and the one for basalt outcrops "Assessment: Gold, diamond and uranium source". The model puts about 3,449 shale outcrops in a world, most in Mountains (662), Blood Kelp Zone (506), Bulb Zone (328).
- Basalt outcrops are not in our chance model, and what a broken outcrop drops is not in the data we read. Diamonds from rock are therefore not counted in the numbers on this page.

What diamonds makes
8recipes- 8 recipes in the game's crafting table use diamonds; the table below lists the heaviest users.
- Hull reinforcement: 3 Titanium, 1 Lithium, 4 Diamond, made at the Vehicle upgrade console.
- Prawn suit drill arm: 5 Titanium, 1 Lithium, 4 Diamond, made at the Vehicle upgrade console.
Before you go
- Top three: Inactive Lava Zone (104), Deep Grand Reef (62), Bones Field (51). Together that is 70% of the chance.
- It is deep. 90% of the diamonds chance lies below 497 m, so plan oxygen, a depth module or a vehicle before you go.
- Loose diamonds are very deep. 90% of their chance lies below 497 m, so rock may be the nearer source: the PDA names shale as a diamond source.
- Deep Grand Reef is the shallowest of the main areas (450 to 533 m).
The spawns are a model, not checked in a running game, and they are rolled again for every new game: a bright cell here can be empty in your save.

Diamonds by area, every recipe and how the chance is worked out.
How the chance is worked out
Diamonds are not placed by hand. For every spawn slot in the world the game rolls once at the start of a new game, picking from the list of things that slot's area allows. We read those lists and the slots from the game files and add up, for diamonds, the chance of every slot. "Expected spawns" is that sum: the average over many new games, not the count in yours.
That makes this page a set of odds. A cell the map paints bright is where slots that can hold diamonds are packed closest, not a promise of a find. Nobody has checked the model against a running game, so the area order is more reliable than any single number.
Diamonds by area
Every area where the spawn tables allow diamonds, most expected spawns first. Depth is metres below sea level: the shallow end and the deep end of the range that holds 80% of the area's chance.
| Area | Expected spawns | Share of the world | Depth range | Spawn slots |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Inactive Lava Zone | 104 | 34% | 1,241 to 1,355 m | 4,132 |
| Deep Grand Reef | 62 | 20% | 450 to 533 m | 13,986 |
| Bones Field | 51 | 17% | 641 to 769 m | 8,754 |
| Lost River Junction | 37 | 12% | 653 to 826 m | 2,384 |
| Ghost Tree | 32 | 10% | 548 to 657 m | 3,723 |
| Lost River Corridor | 25 | 8% | 604 to 764 m | 234 |
Common mistakes
- Looking for loose diamonds in mid-depth water. Even the shallowest main area, Deep Grand Reef, starts at 450 m.
- Skipping the rock. The PDA names shale and basalt outcrops as diamond sources; the numbers here cover loose diamonds only.
- Heading to Inactive Lava Zone unprepared. It holds 34% of the loose-diamond chance at 1,241 to 1,355 m, and Deep Grand Reef is next at 450 to 533 m. Check the leviathan guide first.
About these numbers
Every fixed place on this page is read from the game files of the Steam build 20241558 (3 October 2025). Anything that is rolled again for each new game, such as ore, is a chance model built from the game's spawner tables. It has not been checked in a running game, so treat it as odds, not as a map of what you will find.
The diamonds chance is the map's "Diamond" layer: 310 expected spawns across 6 areas.
