Subnautica Leviathans: Where Each One Lives
The game data places 40 leviathan pins: 25 Reapers (19 to 363 m, mostly in Crash Zone, Dunes, Mountains), 3 Ghost Leviathans (273 to 307 m), 3 Sea Dragons (1,106 to 1,404 m) and 6 Sea Emperor spawn points. The shallowest Reaper pin starts at 19 m.
- Reaper Leviathans2519 to 363 m, median 224 m
- Ghost Leviathans3 + 3adults 273 to 307 m, juveniles 591 to 833 m
- Sea Dragons31,106 to 1,404 m, no map area
- Sea Emperor spawn points669 to 209 m
The leviathan layer on our map answers "where is each one". This page answers the questions around it: how many of each kind, how deep, in which area, and what the game's own PDA says before you go.

All five kinds at a glance
Pins are the places the game data puts a creature or its spawn point. Depth is metres below sea level at the pin. "Threat" is the last line of the game's own PDA entry.
| Kind | Pins | Depth | Median | Map areas | The game's threat line |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reaper Leviathan | 25 | 19 to 363 m | 224 m | Crash Zone (9), Dunes (8), Mountains (7), Bulb Zone (1) | Extreme threat - Avoid in all circumstances |
| Ghost Leviathan | 3 | 273 to 307 m | 291 m | Grand Reef (2), Blood Kelp Zone (1) | Extreme threat - Avoid the crater edge |
| Ghost Leviathan juvenile | 3 | 591 to 833 m | 688 m | no map area (2), Blood Kelp Zone (1) | Avoid |
| Sea Dragon Leviathan | 3 | 1,106 to 1,404 m | 1,164 m | no map area (3) | Extreme threat - Avoid in all circumstances |
| Sea Emperor spawn points | 6 | 69 to 209 m | 111 m | Mountains (2), Underwater Islands (1), Crag Field (1), Dunes (1), Grand Reef (1) | no threat line in its entries |
Reaper Leviathan
The Reaper is the leviathan most players meet first. The data places 25 of them, more than every other kind together, at 19 to 363 m below sea level (median 224 m). They are spread over 4 map areas: Crash Zone (9), Dunes (8), Mountains (7), Bulb Zone (1). The nearest one to the Aurora wreck is 287 m from its pin, at 86 m deep.
The game's own PDA entry says the Reaper is "capable of locking prey in place with four powerful mandibles", that "Simulated pressure exceeds Seamoth crush resistance" and, about its roar, "if you can hear it, the reaper can see you". It ends "Assessment: Extreme threat - Avoid in all circumstances".
Ghost Leviathan and its juveniles
There are 3 adult Ghost Leviathan pins, at 273 to 307 m (Grand Reef (2), Blood Kelp Zone (1)), and 3 juveniles at 591 to 833 m (no map area (2), Blood Kelp Zone (1)). The adults: 291 m deep, 273 m deep, 307 m deep. The juveniles: 833 m deep, 688 m deep, 591 m deep.
The PDA says adults "have been encountered exclusively around the edges of the volcanic crater" and "react with extreme aggression on approach", and ends "Assessment: Extreme threat - Avoid the crater edge". The juvenile entry calls it a large predator attacking anything and everything in its quest to grow larger and ends "Assessment: Avoid".
Sea Dragon Leviathan
The data places 3 Sea Dragons, at 1,106 to 1,404 m below sea level, deeper than anything else on this page. None has a map area, so they sit outside the biome areas our map draws. The pins: 1,106 m deep, 1,404 m deep, 1,164 m deep.
The PDA says the scanned specimen measured 112m in length, that it was seen stalking the very heart of the volcanic crater, and that it likely "ventures out into cooler waters to hunt other, smaller leviathans". It ends "Assessment: Extreme threat - Avoid in all circumstances".
Sea Emperor Leviathan
The data has 6 Sea Emperor spawn points, 5 for juvenile emperors and 1 for its babies, at 69 to 209 m (Mountains (2), Underwater Islands (1), Crag Field (1), Dunes (1), Grand Reef (1)). The full-grown emperor in the alien facility is not one of these pins.
The game's PDA gives no threat line for the emperor. Its entries describe the animal's life cycle and its young: of a juvenile it says the specimen is "producing a highly potent form of Enzyme 42".
What the data does not say
These are the places the game data puts a creature at the start. A leviathan swims, so a pin shows where one begins, not where it stays. We found no leviathan in the random spawn tables, so these pins are the whole list we can give, but the data we read does not cover health, damage, speed or how to get away. This page gives only what the game's own PDA says.
Wild fish and smaller predators are rolled again for every new game and are not here. The predator pins cover the hand-placed ones.
Common mistakes
- Assuming deep means dangerous and shallow means safe. Reaper pins start as shallow as 19 m, and 6 of the 25 start above 100 m.
- Treating a pin as a nest. The pin is where the game places the creature; it roams.
- Looking for the adult Sea Emperor on the layer. The 6 pins are spawn points for its young.
About these numbers
Every fixed place on this page is read from the game files of the Steam build 20241558 (3 October 2025). Anything that is rolled again for each new game, such as ore, is a chance model built from the game's spawner tables. It has not been checked in a running game, so treat it as odds, not as a map of what you will find.
Counts are the pins of the map's leviathan layer: 40 in all (25 Reaper, 3 Ghost, 3 Ghost juvenile, 3 Sea Dragon, 6 Sea Emperor spawn points).
