How to Get the Modification Station in Subnautica
Scan 3 Modification station fragments to learn it, then build it from 1 Computer chip, 1 Titanium, 1 Diamond, 1 Lead. None of the 22 fixed fragment pins is one of them; the model rolls them in Mushroom Forest and Crag Field. The vehicle upgrade console is a different item, learned from 4 data boxes.

Players search for "the modification station" and find two different things. This page separates them, gives the station's recipe and the fragment hunt from the game's data, and says plainly which parts the data does not cover.
What you need

How to get the Modification station, step by step
Step 1
Know which one you want
- Modification station (the game's Workbench): "Advanced fabricator for modification of survival equipment." You learn it from 3 fragments. This page is about it.
- Vehicle upgrade console: "Build in the moonpool to upgrade docked vehicles." It is a different item, learned from data boxes. It is covered at the end of this page, because one of the game's own messages calls it "the vehicle modification station".

Step 2
Find 3 Modification station fragments
- 3fragments needed
- 45expected per game
- 0fixed pins
- The game's text for the fragment: "A damaged section of one of the Aurora's equipment modification stations."
- None of the 22 fixed blueprint fragment pins on our map is one of these (0 of 22), so they are rolled for each new game.
- The model puts the rolled ones in Mushroom Forest and Crag Field: Mushroom Forest (about 26, 161 to 218 m), Crag Field (about 19, 174 to 333 m).
- The game's tables also list the fragment among the finds of "tech sites" (the game's own name for those spawn spots) in Blood Kelp Zone, Bulb Zone, Grassy Plateaus, Jellyshroom Caves, Mountains, Mushroom Forest, Sparse Reef. The spots of those sites are not in the data we read, so they have no pins and no numbers here.
The ground rolls are a model, not checked in a running game, and they are rolled again for every new game.

Scan each fragment
- Each scan takes 3 seconds and uses the fragment up.
- The blueprint unlocks after 3 scans.
Step 4
Gather the materials
- 1Computer chip
- 1Titanium
- 1Diamond
- 1Lead
- One station takes 1 Computer chip, 1 Titanium, 1 Diamond, 1 Lead.
- A Computer chip takes 2 Table coral sample, 1 Gold, 1 Copper wire at the Fabricator.
- Diamond is the deep one: see where to find diamonds. Titanium and lead are covered in the starter resources guide.
Step 5
Build it
- It is built with the Habitat Builder.
- You do not have to build one to use one: the Aurora's PDA says "please use the mod station in the forward section". See the Aurora door codes.
Common mistakes
- Searching the fixed fragment pins. None of the 22 is a Modification station fragment; they roll per game.
- Building the vehicle upgrade console and expecting the station. The console works inside a moonpool and upgrades docked vehicles; the station modifies survival equipment.
- Walking past the Aurora's own station. Its PDA sends you to the forward section.
The vehicle upgrade console
This is the item the game's own error message calls "the vehicle modification station". It is built from 3 Titanium, 1 Computer chip, 1 Copper wire, and the tooltip reads "Build in the moonpool to upgrade docked vehicles."
The data has a scan entry for 2 fragments of it, but every spawn table lists those fragments at chance zero, so in the data we read the blueprint comes from the 4 data boxes below.
| Area | Depth | Map |
|---|---|---|
| Grassy Plateaus | 104 m | Open the pin |
| Dunes | 223 m | Open the pin |
| Sparse Reef | 209 m | Open the pin |
| Mushroom Forest | 110 m | Open the pin |
About these numbers
Every fixed place on this page is read from the game files of the Steam build 20241558 (3 October 2025). Anything that is rolled again for each new game, such as ore, is a chance model built from the game's spawner tables. It has not been checked in a running game, so treat it as odds, not as a map of what you will find.
Fragment chances are built from the game's spawner tables; the data boxes are the map's data box layer.
