Step 1: Get Logs
Log: "Obtained by cutting down trees and chopping them. Can be used for crafting various items and for building structures." The tutorial adds that you need an Axe, which "can be bought or crafted in Creation Menu in the Handcrafting section", and that a stump you do not dig up will regrow into a tree. The Lumberjack vendors also sell Logs at a base price of 1 coin.
Step 2: Craft Planks
The Plank recipe is 1 Log for 2 Plank, 4 seconds, with the Axe as the tool (cost 1) and 1.9 Extraction experience. No technology cost is stored. The item's own text is "Crafted from a Log using Carpenter's Rack in the Woodshed. Can be used for building structures."
Step 3: Let a lumberjack do it
The Woodshed I costs 8 Log, 8 Stone, 8 Straw and needs Building technology level 100. Its text: "A type of extraction building. Workers employed here will provide Logs and Sticks as well as Firewood and Planks which can be crafted here." The production file stores 0.559 an hour for Planks and 0.904 an hour for Logs. The tutorial lists the Woodshed as a firewood source too, so one hut covers Logs, Sticks, Planks and fuel.

Common mistakes
- Crafting without the Axe in your hand. The tool is part of the recipe.
- Burning Planks. The tutorial says you can burn Firewood, Sticks, Logs and Planks; keep the Planks for the building costs that ask for them.
- Skipping the Woodshed. At 0.559 an hour for Planks it pays for its 8 Log, 8 Stone, 8 Straw.
