How to Get Straw in Medieval Dynasty
You get Straw three ways: pick up Reeds (67 reed patches on the Valley map, 129 on Oxbow), thresh grain in the Barn (7 Straw for every 7 crops) or put a worker in an Excavation Shed (5.5 an hour in the files).

Straw has a base price of 0.1 coin and sits in the cost of most first buildings. Here are the three ways to get it, with the numbers from the files.

The 4 steps at a glance
Numbers are from the game files (version 2.5.0.2); Steam's build is newer.

Thresh grain in the Barn
7 Straw per 7 crops.
Hire an Excavation Shed worker
5.5 an hour, as the files store it.
Spend it
5 recipes and 29 buildings use Straw.
Step 1: Pick up Reeds
The item's text reads "A type of building material. Collected from picking up Reeds or from crafting crops into Grains on the Threshing Floor in the Barn. Can be used for crafting various items and for building structures.". The recipe behind it, "Straw", has no ingredients, takes 0 seconds and gives 1 Straw, with 0.2 Extraction experience: you just gather the plant.
The map has a layer called "Reeds and Typha" with 67 pins on the Valley map and 129 on the Oxbow map. Berries and mushrooms have their own layers if you are foraging at the same time: Berry bushes and Mushrooms.
Step 2: Thresh grain in the Barn
The Barn I costs 64 Stick, 27 Log, 12 Stone, 48 Straw and unlocks at Farming technology level 10. The game says it "Has the Threshing Floor, the Quern and the Workbench inside". Straw comes out of the Threshing Floor whenever you turn a cereal into grain:
| Crop | Put in | Grain out | Straw out | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wheat Grain | 7 Wheat | 10 Wheat Grain | 7 | 1 s |
| Oat Grain | 7 Oat | 14 Oat Grain | 7 | 1 s |
| Rye Grain | 7 Rye | 14 Rye Grain | 7 | 1 s |
Grain is the by-product, Straw is the bottleneck
Animal feed uses 1 Oat Grain, 1 Rye Grain and 5 Straw. Threshing 7 Oat and 7 Rye gives 14 grain of each but only 14 Straw, which is enough for 2 feed. See animal feed.
Step 3: Hire an Excavation Shed worker
The Excavation Shed costs 26 Log, 8 Stone, 32 Straw and needs Building technology level 500. Its text: "A type of extraction building. Workers employed here will provide Stone, Straw, Limestone, Clay and Copper Ore.". The file lists 2 people with the Miner profession and a tax of 30. The production file stores 5.5 an hour for Straw, by far the biggest number of any material it makes, which makes Straw what that shed is best at. Whether the rate is per worker or per building the file does not say.
Step 4: Spend it
5 recipes and 29 buildings list Straw. Buildings take the most. The game says house costs "may vary depending on the house foundation", so some buildings have several cost variants; the biggest single costs are:
| Building | Cost | Straw |
|---|---|---|
| House | cost variant 1 of 3 | 60 |
| House | single cost | 60 |
| Barn I | single cost | 48 |
| Barn II | single cost | 48 |
| Fishing Hut I | single cost | 48 |
| Simple House | cost variant 1 of 3 | 48 |
- Animal Feed: 1 Oat Grain, 1 Rye Grain, 5 Straw makes 1 Animal Feed.
- Daub: 10 Straw, 10 Clay makes 10 Daub.
- Simple Torch: 1 Stick, 9 Straw makes 1 Simple Torch.
- Basic Hat: 20 Straw, 1 Linen Fabric makes 1 Basic Hat.
Common mistakes
- Buying it. The base price is 0.1 coin, but Farmer and Stallholder Resources vendors sell it; gathering it is faster.
- Threshing for the grain only. The Straw you throw away is what the next buildings cost.
- Forgetting Oxbow. If you play there, the reed layer has 129 pins: open it.
