How to Keep Villagers Happy in Medieval Dynasty

Game files, version 2.5.0.23 min read

A villager's Mood runs from -100 to 100, and one who reaches the bottom leaves the village. Mood falls with no food, firewood, water or bed, and rises with a sturdier house, a job and a family. It also moves work speed by -20% to +20%.

The tutorial says it in pieces, in different entries. This page puts the rules for villagers in the order you will meet them, with the numbers the files hold.

The 6 steps to happy villagers

  1. Step 1

    Invite Travellers

    • 10village pins, Valley
    • You need the proper level of Dynasty Reputation first.
    • Then look for Travellers, usually at campfires in villages (the village layer has 10 pins on the Valley map), and invite them to the settlement.
  2. Step 2

    Give each one a house

    • 11house places
    • Homeless newcomers lose Mood quickly, so house them early.
    • You choose the house, but only people of different sexes can share one.
    • A man and a woman with an age difference of at most 20 years in one house are likely to have a child after a while.
    • The file lists three house types: Simple Small House (3 places), Simple House (4 places), House (4 places).
    • Construction resources may vary with the house foundation.
  3. Step 3

    Stock food, water and firewood

    • Store Food, Water and Firewood in the house chests.
    • After you build a Resource Storage and a Food Storage, villagers collect what they need themselves, and you get a notification when they are hungry, thirsty or cold.
    • Food comes from meat, fish, bread and dishes from the Kitchen, vegetables and fruit, and forest mushrooms.
    • Water comes from the Well, rivers, cows milked in the Cowshed, fruit and berries.
    • Firewood burns as Firewood, Sticks, Logs and Planks.
  4. Step 4

    Give them jobs

    • 23professions
    • Matching a task to a worker's ability gives better results.
    • Employed workers gather resources, develop Technologies and raise their own skills.
    • The file lists 23 worker professions in 6 skills (Extraction, Crafting, Hunting, Survival, Farming, Diplomacy), and 39 buildings that name a profession.
    • Use the People Management tab to see each villager's age, mood, profession and skills, and to change housing and jobs.
  5. Step 5

    Watch Mood

    • -100 to 100Mood range
    • Mood runs from -100 to 100.
    • At the lowest point the resident leaves.
    • Missing food, firewood, water or a bed lowers it, random events move it, and a job, a family and a sturdier house raise it.
    • It also sets how eagerly people work: the speed of production, the stallholders' pace of trading and the rate builders repair structures change by -20% at Mood -100 and +20% at 100.
  6. Step 6

    Train the teenagers

    • halfof the adult learning rate
    • Teenagers (14-18 years) can work in production buildings as apprentices.
    • They learn at half the adult rate and add nothing to production, and the building needs at least one adult worker (18-55 years) for the learning to happen.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving newcomers homeless. It lowers Mood fast.
  • Skipping the storages. Without a Resource Storage and a Food Storage villagers cannot collect what they need on their own.
  • Putting two men or two women in one house. Only people of different sexes can live together.
