The 4 steps at a glance
Everything starts as wheat. Thatch and cob are what you build with, and the number of buildings that ask for them is large.

Get wheat. Plant it; the map has 3 wild spots.

Thresh it into straw. 12s per straw.

Weave thatch and mix cob. 5 straw per thatch.

Plan the quantity. Village Hall, Town Hall and the thatch-hungry builds.
Step 1: Get wheat
Wild wheat is scarce: the wiki's map has 3 wheat pins, and one of them sits in the guarded wheat fields south of Padstow (the wiki says a quest letter keeps the guards from attacking). For anything beyond a first batch, plant it: a Farm (wiki tier 1) grows wheat (the wiki lists Farm, Foraging Camp, Foraging Hut, Foraging Lodge as gathering it), and the farming guide lists what else it takes.
What the tables leave out
The wiki gives no growth time or yield per plant for wheat, so there is no wheat-per-hour figure on this page.
Step 2: Thresh it into straw
Straw is 1 Wheat at a Thresher in 12s. The Thresher is a tier-1 building and costs 10 Wood, 1 Tin Ingot, 3 Log. Straw is not only for thatch: 16 products use it, including cob, the Apiary and the Forester.
Pro tip
Straw is what a thatch order really costs, so thresh in bulk while you are at the machine: 5 straw is only 1m.
Step 3: Weave thatch and mix cob
Thatch is 5 Straw at a Weaver Loom in 35s. The loom (tier 1) costs 10 Wood, 13 River Reed, 8 Crude Stone.
Cob is 1 Water, 1 Straw, 2 Mud at a Mixing Bucket in 25s. The bucket costs 10 Mud, 10 Wood, 1 Tin Ingot, 3 Log. The map has 5 mud pins; the wiki lists a Mud Collector that gathers Mud for you.
| Product | Made from | Building | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Wheat | Thresher | 12s | |
| 5 Straw | Weaver Loom | 35s | |
| 1 Water, 1 Straw, 2 Mud | Mixing Bucket | 25s |
Step 4: Plan the quantity
The Village Hall asks 20 thatch to build, the Town Hall 65 thatch and 50 cob. In all, 38 buildings on the wiki ask for thatch. The biggest orders:
| Building | Thatch | Wheat for it |
|---|---|---|
| 65 | 325 | |
| 40 | 200 | |
| 32 | 160 | |
| 28 | 140 | |
| 28 | 140 | |
| 26 | 130 | |
| 25 | 125 | |
| 25 | 125 |
Risks
Do not queue every building at once. Thatch is 1m 35s of machine time each, so 20 of them is 31m 40s in total.
Common mistakes
- Counting thatch, not wheat. One thatch is 5 wheat.
- Relying on wild wheat. The map has 3 spots.
- Forgetting cob. The Town Hall wants 50, and cob needs mud and a Mixing Bucket.
