Five steps from the first kill to the first Leather, using the wiki's recipe and cost tables and the wiki map's pins. Where the wiki is silent, the page says so.

The 5 steps at a glance
Animals give raw materials, racks turn them into crafting materials, and crafting eats a lot of them.

Know what each animal gives. Hide, pelt, fur.

Find the animals. 22 wolf and 25 boar pins.

Skin it or take it to the Butchery. Better return at the Butchery.

Dry and tan. Drying Rack, then Tanning Rack.

Spend it. 46 products use Leather.
Step 1: Know what each animal gives
Each animal gives one kind of skin, and they are not interchangeable. The wiki's item pages say:
| Material | Where it comes from | Used in |
|---|---|---|
| Skinned from deer. Also dropped by hostiles. | 20 products | |
| A common yield from hunting rabbits and wolves; some livestock, such as pigs, give it too. | 27 products | |
| A common yield from hunting boars and foxes. | 10 products |
Wiki-sourced
These drops are paraphrased from the Bellwright Wiki's item pages (CC BY-SA). The recipe tables do not list drop rates, so this page gives none.
Step 2: Find the animals
The wiki's map pins 22 wolf habitats (nearest villages: Bradford (8), Haerndean (7), Padstow (6), Farnworth (1)) and 25 boar habitats (Bradford (8), Farnworth (7), Padstow (7), Haerndean (2)). Open wolves and boars on the map. There are no deer or rabbit pins, so hide and rabbit pelts have to be hunted by sight.
If hunting is not for you, the merchants guide lists who buys and sells Hide: 5 merchants sell it to you and 2 buy it from you.
Step 3: Skin it, or use a Butchery
You can skin an animal where it fell. The wiki adds that processing the carcass at a Butchery gives a better return. The Butchery is a wiki tier-1 building and costs 8 Wooden Plank, 3 Log, 5 Copper Nails, 7 Wood, 2 Rope.
For a steady supply the wiki lists two hunting buildings: the Hunters Camp (tier 2, 8 Log, 12 Thatch, 12 Rope, 18 Wood, 22 Wooden Plank, 10 Copper Nails) and the Hunter's Lodge (tier 3, 24 Cob, 6 Cured Rope, 6 Iron Nails, 12 Hardwood Plank, 40 Thatch). The tables do not say how many animals either one brings in.
Pro tip
Hunt more than one kind of animal. Leather needs a pelt for every raw hide, and a boar gives fur, not pelt.
Step 4: Dry it, then tan it
Raw Hide is made from Hide on a Drying Rack (wiki tier 2, 3 Log, 2 Rope). The wiki gives no time or amount for this step.
Leather is made on a Tanning Rack (tier 2, 8 Wooden Plank, 10 Wood, 4 Rope, 4 Copper Nails): 1 Raw Hide, 1 Pelt, 12m. Crude Fur is 2 Fur on the same rack, 10m. The wiki also lists a Tanner's Hut (tier 2, 6 Log, 14 Thatch, 15 Rope, 30 Wooden Plank, 8 Wood, 8 Copper Nails), and says leather is tanned by a Tanner.
| Product | Made from | Building | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hide | Drying Rack | not listed | |
| 1 Raw Hide, 1 Pelt | Tanning Rack | 12m | |
| 2 Fur | Tanning Rack | 10m |
Risks
Tanning is slow (12m per leather), so one rack is a bottleneck once you need leather in numbers (the Town Hall research alone asks 10).
Step 5: Spend it
Leather is in 46 recipes, Raw Hide in 36 and Pelt in 27, mostly clothing, armour and weapons. It also gates tiers: the Village Hall research asks for 10 Hide, the Town Hall research for 10 Leather, and the Town Hall itself for 23 Raw Hide to build. See best armor for what to make of it and the tech tree for the research costs.
Common mistakes
- Hunting only deer. Leather needs a pelt as well as a raw hide.
- Expecting the map to show deer. It shows wolves and boars only.
- One rack for everything. 12m per leather adds up.
