Sword & Board Tank
Also known asSword & BoardTank BuildHeavy Plate Tank
Plate-armor frontline that eats hits and counters. Heavy/Shiny Plates + Brute keep damage low, Battle Heal + Absorb close the gap on health management.
Skills in this build
Stat priority
- Primary
- CON — every pip is HP and damage reduction. Most important attribute in the game for the tank role.
- Secondary
- STR — scales melee damage; you still need to kill things between blocks.
Recommended weapons
- Primary
- One-hand sword (best base damage you can craft) + heavy shield with the highest block-stamina rating.
- Secondary
- Mace for armoured enemies — bludgeon damage shines vs heavy mobs.
Armor
Full heavy-plate set. Stack physical defence over fire/ice — Battle Heal covers elemental gaps.
Food & consumables
- HP-regen stew
- Block-window-extending tea
- Stamina dish for parry windows
Gear progression — Early / Mid / Best-in-Slot
What to use at each phase of the build. Early game = pre-Lv 15; Mid = Lv 15-30; Best-in-Slot = Lv 30+ endgame.
| Slot | Early Game (Lv 1-15) | Mid Game (Lv 15-30) | Best-in-Slot (Lv 30+) |
|---|---|---|---|
| weapon | Crafted iron one-hand sword + wooden shield | Tier-2 sword + steel heavy shield (block-stamina rating) | Legendary sword + Hollow Halls Tank shield (+parry-window mod) |
| armor | Mixed leather (heavy plate too stamina-costly without Heavy Plates) | Full heavy plate from Nomad Highlands Hollow Halls | Full Hollow Halls Tank Set with primary-resistance gem |
| food | CON-boost stew, basic HP-regen stew | CON + STR dual stew, stamina-cost-reduction tea | Pre-pull 3-stack: CON stew + HP-regen + stamina-cost-reduction tea |
Playstyle
Always be the closest to the enemy. Pull aggro with a Slasher opener, raise the shield, parry the first attack (Counterstrike-equivalent passive), then Battle Heal as your HP dips below 70%. Absorb is your panic button — pop it before the boss's telegraphed heavy. The DPS comes from the gaps between blocks, not from raw burst; trust the slow grind.
Strengths & weaknesses
Pros
- Highest survivability in the game; hardest build to die on
- Group-essential — somebody has to hold the line
- Easy to play: 4 buttons (attack / block / heal / absorb) cover most fights
- Shines vs heavy-melee bosses and dungeon trash waves
Cons
- Lowest DPS of the four archetypes — solo content is slow
- Heavy plate eats stamina; no dodge-rolling out of mistakes
- Useless against ranged-spam bosses or Shroud-AoE encounters
Synergies & counters
Pairs with
- · Ranger Sniper / Mage burst DPS that need a meatshield
- · Healer Support that keeps you topped while you tank the boss
Struggles against
- · Bosses that root or knock you back out of melee range
- · Multi-target ranged encounters; the shield only blocks one direction

Why pick these skills in this order (expand per-band focus)
Lv 1-15
CON pips first, then HEAVY_PLATES + BRUTE. Survivability before damage.
Lv 15-30
ABSORB + BATTLE_HEAL for sustain. SHINY_PLATES round-out armor.
Lv 30-45
VIGOROUS_DEFLECTION as the capstone — passive parry-on-block makes you nearly unkillable.
FAQ
- Is the tank viable solo?
- Yes for content clearing, no for speed. You'll survive everything but kill slowly. Most tank-mains splice in 4-6 Mage points (Arsonist + Sun Aura) to chip damage between blocks.
- Best shield for the tank?
- Heavy shield with the highest block-stamina rating. Some players prefer the +parry-window variants for boss fights. Avoid bucklers — they trade survivability for mobility, which you don't need.
- When do I drop Heavy Plates?
- Never on a pure tank. If you want a hybrid (Battlemage Tank) swap to medium armor + a staff offhand, but the tank loses its identity at that point.
